What is traumatic brain injury?
There are different kinds of traumatic brain injury. The most obvious type occurs when there is damage to the skull where it cracks or breaks. This kind of TBI is referred to as a penetrating head injury. In closed head injuries there is no apparent damage to the skull but the brain is damaged – bruised, torn or bleeding. The jolting impact from a blow, shaking or sudden jerking causes the soft brain tissue to crush against the skull. Examples of closed head injuries include TBI from whiplash or shaken baby syndrome where a child or baby suffers brain injury from being shaken.
What are symptoms of TBI?
- Physical Symptoms - dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting, loss of balance, blurred vision, drowsiness, disrupted sleep, appetite disturbance
- Mental Symptoms - confusion, amnesia, short-term memory loss, poor concentration, disorientation
- Emotional Symptoms - personality changes, agitation, depression, irritability, apathy, aggression, uncontrollable anger, fear, impatience
If your head injury does not seem serious, you should still see a doctor for medical examination. Whiplash or a blow to the head may result in symptoms that do not emerge until hours later after the brain swells. A doctor will know what to look for and ask you questions that may reveal TBI early on before symptoms worsen.
What long term problems may be associated with TBI?
Soft signs are symptoms of TBI that begin to appear after the injury and sometimes do not appear until considerable time has gone by. Subtle neurological or mental changes may go undetected. When TBI results in long term problems, you may deal with paralysis, loss of coordination, sensation or intellectual capacity. When extreme, the brain damage may be life-threatening and irreversible. The effect on family, friends and work can be profound and result in a much lower quality of life.
